Vayda's Last Hope
Humane Society dedicated to saving "one life at a time"
Vayda's
Last Hope Humane Society in memory of Gilbert Vayda, our founder, our benefactor, my adviser and one of my best friends. He
was a lover of ALL animals large or small, good, bad, ugly, mean, one eyed, three legged, young or old. He loved them all!

Our Purpose I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of
human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry. "God,"
I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment, and then spoke
softly, "I
have done something," was the reply, "I created you." --Author Unknown--
IN
MEMORY BUDDY'S SUNSET; 12/16/07 SADLY BUDDY LOST HIS BATTLE WITH THE HEARTWORM DISEASE ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER
16, 2007. WE MISS HIM SO MUCH ALREADY, HE WAS SUCH A GENTLE AND LOVING DOG. I AM GOING TO LEAVE HIS STORY HERE,
JUST BECAUSE I CAN'T BEAR TO TAKE IT DOWN YET. I was out of town, when Frank
called to inform me that we now had 45 dogs. We keep saying "we can't take any more dogs" and somehow
they keep finding us. One day, all the dogs were going crazy and barking at something out in the woods. When Frank
went out to investigate, he saw what looked like a dog making its way toward the house. When he got close enough, he
called him over, put his hand out and the sweet little boy came right up to him and practically collapsed in his arms.
He was so thin, just skin and bones. Needless to say, he got him right to the vet. He weighed 42 lbs. had heartworm,
ticks and fleas. That was 2 months ago and
he has now put on a little weight. We are currently treating him for heartworm, but he is doing great. Buddy has
a great smile, and he is the sweetest dog. He gets along with the other dogs and he LOVES people, which amazes me, considering
how he was treated in the past.

CURLY Terrier/Shih
Tzu Mix 2 YEARS OLD
Curly
was our second rescue out here. A woman down the street got my number from the neighbor who sent Ebony to us.
She told us that she had a Bull Dog that she was afraid was going to hurt Curly, so she decided it was best to get "rid"
of him. I don't know what she was so afraid of, I can tell you that Curly can hold his own. In fact, he is
quite the bully. He is one, however, that will need special humans to adopt him. When he first came here, he very badly
wanted to sample a piece of my hand. He is a small dog and having said that he has a "big" attitude. He took
right to Frank, but it took him about a week to accept me. I don't think he was treated very well by women and,
consequently, seems to bond with the men first. Curly is neutered and current on vaccinations.

HOLLY HOUND
DOG 2 1/2 YEARS OLD
Holly is another hunting
dog that was dumped out in the country. Last Christmas, we were all watching a movie and enjoying the warmth of the
fireplace. All of a sudden, all the dogs started barking and looking out the front window. My husband grabbed
his binoculars and looked outside. He saw a dog that he thought was one of ours, so I jumped in my van and headed out
to the road. When I got to the main road, I saw a very wet and scared hunting dog. She had no collar on and, like
all the others, was bone thin. She was very friendly though and when I offered her a cookie, she jumped right in my
van. She was covered in ticks and fleas and had a few pretty bad cuts on her. Well, she looks great now and she
gets along with everyone here and loves all the humans she meets. She is in need of a loving home where she can just
be a pet. I will not adopt her to a "hunting" home, please! She has been spayed and is current on her
vaccines.
She was named "Holly"
because she came to us on Christmas:)

WILLY SHEPHERD MIX? 10 WEEKS OLD
Willy is our newest
addition. One of my neighbors, an 85 year old woman, called me one night and told me tht someone had dropped off a puppy on
her doorstep 5 days earlier. She told me that she could not afford another dog as she had two already. It had
been raining for the past few days, so I asked her if she could keep him inside with her for a few more days. She told
me that she had NOT been keeping him inside anyway and that he was fine sleeping under her truck. I asked her old she
thought he was and she replied "8 weeks, I think." When I heard how young he was, I told her I would be right
over. When I saw that sweet little baby, I cried. He was so small and his belly was so distended. The woman
thought he belly was so big because he was fat. I took him to my vet the following day. He was only 7 weeks old
and weighed 3 lbs. He was so infested with hook and whip worms that she was surprised he was even alive. He was covered
in fleas and was very anemic. We are not sure what breed or mix he is. Who knows, who cares, he is a doll!
We named him "Will" because he had such a "will" to live. He was very "fuzzy" up until
now. He is almost 3 months old and has lost his "fuzz" so he now has a smooth coat. We think he will
be a medium size dog (updated on 11/4/07). 9/24/07 at time of picture.

| He was just 7 weeks old here |

TILLY SHEPHERD MIX? 10 WEEKS OLD
About a week after we
rescued Willy, our neighbors from across the street called Frank and asked him if he would come over. When he arrived
there, they had two puppies waiting for him. They told him that the puppies had been running out in the woods for the
past week and they were finally able to catch them. Frank took one look at them and knew instantly they were Willy's
siblings. Miss Tilly is very quiet, but with a little love and attention, I am sure that she will be a wonderful companion
for a single person, couple or a family with children.

|
BILLY SHEPHERD MIX? 10 WEEKS OLD
Billy is, of course,
Willy and Tilly's brother. He has very different markings from them. He is marked quite like a Border Collie.
Not even our vet can confirm what his mix is. Who cares, they are all wonderful puppies!
|

|
|
Update: 11/3/07 Billy is now around 3 months old
and is losing his "baby fuzz" just like Willy and Tilly. He is healthy and very playful and is looking for
a good home!

TWIGGY LAB/CHOW MIX? 1 1/2 YEARS OLD
One day on my way
home from the grocery store, I spotted her on the side of the road in a ditch. She was scrounging around for something
to eat. As I passed by her the first time, I could count every rib in her chest, so I turned around and went back to
get a closer look. I didn't have any dog food with me, so I dug into my grocery bag and pulled out a loaf of bread
to intice her with. She wouldn't come anywhere near me, so I started tossing bread at her. Piece by piece
she gobbled it up, until she had finished half the loaf. Eventually, she let me pick her up and I took her straight
to my vet. Because she was in such bad shape, I had to hospitalize her for a few days. She was covered in ticks and
infested with fleas. She also had mange and tape worms. Look at her now! She is the picture of health and is ready
for a new home. It goes without saying, that she loves other dogs and every human she comes in contact with. She
has been spayed and is current on vaccines. She was so skinny, we named her "Twiggy" but now she's more
like a tree trunk instead of a twig!

EBONY LAB/CHOW MIX? 2 1/2 YEARS OLD
Ebony was the first
dog that we rescued after we arrived here. One day one of my neighbors called me to ask if I was missing any black dogs.
Well, since I have more fencing that anyone else in South Carolina and it is more secure that Fort Knox, I knew it wasn't
one of ours. She told me that she was a sweet little dog, but that she had been hanging around her property for a few
days and if I didn't take her, then she believed that her husband was going to do something "bad" to her.
I asked her if he was going to shoot her and she very calmly replied, "well, yes, I believe he will" so we went
right over and picked her up. Ebony likes to play a little rough sometimes, so I feel she would best be suited with
a playmate a little larger than her, a male dog or as an only child. She does get along with all the dogs here, males
and females alike, but she just demands a little extra attention. She is spayed and current on her vaccines. 9/22/07

HUNTER HOUND DOG 2 YEARS OLD
This little guy showed
up one day, skinny, cut up and scared. He had a collar on with the identification tag torn off. What that means
out here, is that when a hunting dog shows up with either no collar or one that has obviously had the tag torn off, his owner
has abandoned him. It took us several days to trap him in our side yard. He was so scared when we tried to approach
him that he urinated all over himself. We took him to the vet, had him stitched up, neutered and vaccinated. He clearly
has had very little human contact and, therefore, doesn't really trust them. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body
and has NEVER tried to bite or even growl at us, he just doesn't know how to trust. He loves the other dogs and
plays well with them, in fact, the only time you see his tail wag, is if there is a dog in the vicinity. We rescued him at
least 9 months ago and to this day he still runs from us. However, if it starts to rain and the thunder joins in, he will have his
nose pressed up to the window. He wants in the house and he doesn't care even if he has to pass by us to get in.
He is petrified of the thunder and at least he feels safe with us in the house. I consider him adoptable, but he would
require a person that would never give up on him. We have just accepted him and pray that if we can't find a match
for him, he will just trust us enough so that one day he will allow himself to be loved.

GEORGE BOXER
MIX 2 YEARS OLD
George came to me as
a trade. One of my client's, Brandi, rescued George. He was hanging around the school that she teaches at.
He was thin and clearly without a home. She took him to her house, but he wanted her cats in the worst way. Needless
to say, she was having to kennel him until she found him a home. George is a great dog, he has tons of energy and loves
to play. He gets along with most of the dogs around here. I feel that he would be best suited with a female dog or as
an only child. About
the same time, Brandi found George, I found a very old, female hound who was dumped out in the woods on a very rainy day.
Of course, I took her home for a meal and a warm bed. She looked to be at least 10 years old and appeared to have been
bred over and over again. We figure, that once she was unable to produce puppies anymore, she was turned out to fend
for herself. I tried to give her a nice piece of chicken, but found out that she couldn't chew, because she only
had 2 teeth. She was COVERED with ticks, and fleas. I knew I would have a hard time getting her placed, so Brandi
offered to adopt her if I would take George. And so it was done. She has named her Winny and her mother and father
fell madly in love with her when they offered to dog sit for Brandi. Now Winnie lives with them at the beach.
What a great reward for a dog who had lived such a hard life.

ANNIE SHEPHERD
MIX 1 1/2 YEARS OLD
Annie is about a year
and half old now. She has the best personality and she gets along with everyone here. One day last winter, it
was pouring rain, thunder, lightning, the whole nine yards. We had a little convenience store out here at the time and
I was just getting ready to close up because of the weather. When I looked outside to make sure the lights were out
on our marquee, I spotted a small brown dog, just standing there shaking and sopping wet. She was trying to figure out
where she could go to get out of the rain. Sooooo, out the door I ran and scooped her up in my arms. She just
looked at me with her big brown eyes and started giving me kisses! I grabbed my jacket, wrapped her up and whisked her
off to the house. She, of course, had no collar on and she was bone thin just like all the dogs who are dumped in the woods
are. She is spayed and current
on her vaccinations. She weighs around 35-40 lbs and she is full grown. She would make a wonderful best friend
for any family. She
is named after "Little Orphan Annie"
